Insight
Tea had become so confined by tradition that it was no longer considered in many moments where it had the potential to belong.
Despite being one of the world's most versatile drinks, with benefits ranging from energy and focus to relaxation, wellbeing and indulgence, tea remained trapped inside a handful of familiar rituals.
The opportunity wasn't to change tea.
It was to expand the moments in which people considered drinking it and inspire new rituals that made tea a more natural part of everyday life.
Opportunity
Special.T had already disrupted the traditional way of making tea.
The opportunity was to become the brand that reinvented when people drank tea.
Objectives
Re-establish Special.T as the master of premium tea.
Transform the brand into a modern digital-first experience.
Reactivate dormant customers and increase tea consumption.
Expand the role tea could play in people's everyday lives.
Strategic Response
Tea had become confined to a handful of traditional rituals and occasions.
Before we could challenge one of tea's oldest conventions, we first needed the credibility to do it.
Special.T had already earned that credibility by disrupting how tea was made.
We had already reinvented how people made tea. The next opportunity was to reinvent when they drank it.
The Idea
As European Creative Director, I partnered with strategy and the business leadership team to lead the creative transformation of Special.T as it evolved into a 100% digital, mobile-first brand.
I championed a more contemporary, graphic and taste-led vision for the brand, deliberately breaking the traditional codes of the tea category to make it more relevant to modern consumers.
By simplifying the visual language, we created a stronger, more distinctive digital presence while significantly reducing production costs across the ecosystem. To ensure consistency and scalability, we also created a comprehensive ingredients library, giving every market access to a high-quality visual asset system that reinforced the brand's premium identity.
I also helped simplify the entire digital ecosystem, advocating for a mobile-first customer journey and working closely with UX teams to create a more intuitive purchasing experience.
I built strong relationships with senior stakeholders across the business, regularly presenting work in Switzerland and collaborating directly with Nestlé's innovation teams to ensure the brand, product innovation and customer experience evolved together.
The transformation was built around two complementary platforms.
T-Master transformed how people saw the brand and why they chose it.
T.TIME transformed how and when people experienced it.
T-Master
The role of T-Master was to redefine the brand.
Built around the launch of the new T-Master machine, it became the unifying platform for Special.T's transformation.
It repositioned Special.T around mastery, innovation and taste, creating a contemporary premium identity and a coherent visual language across every customer touchpoint.
At the same time, we completely reimagined the brand's visual language, creating a simpler, more contemporary digital identity centred around natural ingredients and the idea of T-Master.
Every touchpoint was redesigned for a 100% digital, mobile-first experience, ensuring the brand expressed the same premium standards as the product itself.
T.TIME
The role of T.TIME was to redefine behaviour.
Having earned permission to challenge convention, we turned our attention to behaviour.
Not how people made tea.
When they drank it.
From that insight came T.TIME.
By taking the "T" directly from the Special.T identity, we created a language that only the brand could own.
Rather than creating disconnected seasonal campaigns, we built a behavioural platform capable of continually expanding the moments people associated with tea.
Every activation introduced a new reason to enjoy tea.
T.TIME Summer Time — refreshing rituals and iced teas.
T.TIME Spring Time — renewal and revitalisation.
T.TIME Sports Time — natural energy and recovery.
T.TIME After Meal Time — the perfect finish to a meal.
T.TIME Goodnight Time — calming evening rituals.
T.TIME Me Time — moments of pause and self-care.
T.TIME Mum Time — celebrating everyday moments together.
T.TIME Valentine's Time — sharing meaningful moments.
T.TIME Christmas Time — festive flavours and traditions.
T.TIME New Rituals Time — encouraging people to create healthier daily rituals, making tea part of new behaviours rather than temporary New Year's resolutions.
Each activation challenged another assumption about where tea could belong.
Rather than creating campaigns, T.TIME became a platform that continually uncovered new moments where tea could belong, giving people meaningful reasons to enjoy it more often while inspiring rituals that encouraged long-term behavioural change.
The idea extended far beyond communications. T.TIME influenced product innovation, seasonal tea collections, packaging, accessories and customer experiences. From sports bottles designed for tea on the move, reusable takeaway cups and Special.T ice trays for iced tea, to Mother's Day gift editions and limited seasonal blends such as Pumpkin Spice for Halloween, every expression reinforced the central idea while giving people another reason to make tea part of a new moment or ritual.
Outcome
Over 19 months, the T.TIME platform reactivated more than 250,000 dormant customers by giving people meaningful new reasons to enjoy tea more often.
Rather than relying on product launches to drive engagement, Special.T gained a scalable behavioural platform capable of continually creating new consumption occasions throughout the year.
The transformation also established a coherent digital-first brand experience, giving the business a visual and strategic system that could evolve across CRM, social media, e-commerce, product innovation and customer experience while remaining anchored to one central idea.
What This Taught Me
I learnt that people rarely change their behaviour because we ask them to. They change when we give them a meaningful reason to.
