Insight
Middle leaders are burned out, isolated and carrying the weight of organisational change from both above and below. Despite being one of the most critical groups in any organisation, they're often the least supported.
Opportunity
Reposition middle leadership as one of the most influential places in an organisation, transforming it from a role people endure into one people are proud to lead.
Objectives
Give middle leaders hope and confidence.
Create a programme people genuinely wanted to join.
Differentiate Between Us from traditional leadership courses.
Encourage lasting mindset and behavioural change.
Build a supportive global peer community where leaders could learn from one another and solve real challenges together.
Strategic Response
Don't teach more leadership skills. Change leadership mindsets.
Create a transformational journey that helps people see themselves, their influence and their role differently.
Idea
Working alongside two experienced leadership coaches, I helped uncover the real challenge facing middle leaders and translate it into a clear strategic proposition.
Between Us was born from one simple intention:
To give middle leaders the support they desperately need.
From that came the programme's central organising idea:
Leading the Future from the Middle
Rather than positioning middle management as somewhere to survive, we repositioned it as one of the most influential places in any organisation. The people connecting strategy with action, leadership with teams, and vision with execution.
My role was to shape the strategic positioning, create the programme name and central idea, and develop the communications that invited people into a transformational journey rather than another leadership course.
The programme was built around five interconnected themes that reflected the journey we wanted participants to experience:
Compass Within
Reconnecting with purpose and values.Resilience
Developing the capacity to navigate uncertainty.Courage Over Certainty
Embracing progress over perfection.Influence & Self-Empowerment
Leading through trust, relationships and personal agency. The Power of a Global Network
Learning from others, sharing perspectives and discovering you're not alone.
Rather than delivering another leadership course, we designed a bespoke, mindset-centred experience.
Middle leaders deserve more than theory. They deserve a transformational, mindset-centred experience that creates deep and sustainable change. Because mindset shapes behaviour, and behaviour shapes results.
A key part of the strategy was designing an inter-company programme that brought together leaders from different organisations, industries and countries. Rather than relying solely on facilitators, participants became part of the solution, using one another as sounding boards, sharing perspectives and solving real leadership challenges together.
The journey extended well beyond the live sessions. We created an ongoing support system through newsletters, emails and practical habit activations, helping participants maintain momentum, reinforce new behaviours and remain connected long after each session.
Beyond supporting participants, we also developed an ongoing thought leadership strategy that positioned the programme founders as recognised voices in leadership. Through a regular programme of insights, research and practical content, we reinforced that Between Us was built on deep coaching expertise, behavioural research and real-world leadership experience, strengthening both the credibility of the programme and the reputation of its founders.
Outcome
A distinctive leadership programme with a clear point of difference that participants described as increasing their confidence, resilience and willingness to act. Many spoke about the value of learning alongside peers from different organisations and cultures, discovering they were not alone in facing the challenges of leading from the middle.
Most importantly, many described completing the ten-week journey with a genuine shift in mindset, seeing themselves, their role and their influence in a completely different way.
What This Taught Me
Mindset shapes behaviour. Behaviour shapes results. Real transformation begins by helping people think differently about themselves, so they are capable of leading better.
For the first time, our teams were aligned — sales knew what success looked like, and success knew what sales had promised
